Artificial intelligence threatens democracy as we know it.
- With Big Tech rapidly — and recklessly — developing ever more powerful artificial intelligence, it could soon be impossible to distinguish so-called “deepfakes” from audio and video content that is real.
- A deceptive, AI-generated deepfake could swing the 2024 election. Or an onslaught of deepfakes could leave voters completely at a loss as to what’s real and what’s not — an impossible condition for a functioning democracy.
- And there is currently no federal law that would outright stop political candidates or parties from using deepfakes and artificial intelligence to willfully deceive voters.
That’s why Public Citizen has formally petitioned the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to ban the use of deepfakes by federal candidates and political parties.
The FEC already has the authority to take this crucial and obvious action. But — so far, anyway — it has failed to do the right thing for the sake of our democracy.
The FEC is set to consider our petition this Thursday.
Tell the Federal Election Commission:
Deepfakes pose a significant threat to democracy as we know it. Your job is to safeguard our democracy from exactly these kinds of threats. We urge you to do your job and move forward — before it’s too late — on Public Citizen’s petition for a ban on the use of deepfakes by federal candidates and parties.

Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,
