Dear John,
Donald Trump and his brand of MAGA Republican is unlike any other political force seeking power in American history.
But is Donald Trump really a “fascist,” as some would claim? Or Is “authoritarian” an adequate label?
To really understand what drives this dangerous MAGA movement, we have to understand the differences between authoritarianism and fascism.
Both cast aside the ideals of democracy, but one is far worse than the other.
Which poses the greatest danger to the United States today? You may be able to guess my answer. To find out, check out my latest video, then please share it with your friends to help spread the message.
In this video, I talk about the five elements that define fascism and what makes it distinct from, and more dangerous than, authoritarianism. To fight these ideas, we need to be aware of what they are and how they fit together.
So, is Donald Trump an authoritarian, or is he a full-blown fascist?
Here’s a hint: you can generally identify fascists by their hate of the "other," vengeful nationalism, and repression of dissent.
And if you watch the video, you’ll learn more about fascist movements of the past and how they find expression in today’s MAGA movement led by Trump.
The 2024 election is fast approaching — and the stakes for our nation could not be higher. It’s vital for us to do all we can to alert Americans to the clear and present danger to our democracy.
Thank you for watching,
Robert Reich
