Dear John,
Summertime on the East Coast means storms and heat – but I’ve never seen weather like this before. Climate change is causing more extreme weather than ever – and it’s exacerbating the care crisis.
Climate change impacts our ability to care for ourselves and each other by causing long-term health issues and disproportionately affecting older adults and disabled people, as well as Black and poor people.
We need our elected leaders to make care a key part of their climate plan , and that starts with you calling for more disabled advocates in disaster planning. Tell Congress: Include more disabled people in disaster response planning! [[link removed]]

Climate disasters put older adults and disabled people at risk of displacement and even death. Disabled people already have to navigate a world that wasn’t designed to accommodate them – natural disaster and climate change makes our lives even harder.
In fact:
* Disabled people are two to four times more likely to die or be critically injured during disasters.
* Older adults are also disproportionately at risk due to disaster. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, 71% of deaths were people over the age of 60.
* Natural disasters often displace disabled people and people receiving care. Though just 1% of the U.S. population was forced to leave their homes in the last year due to disaster, that number jumps to 31% for people receiving care.
We need our elected officials to prioritize accessibility when it comes to disaster response plans and to keep our disabled loved ones safe. Take action and tell Congress to bring more disabled advocates to the table when it comes to disaster planning. [[link removed]]

We all depend on a healthy climate, and we all depend on care. We can’t afford to ignore the connections between the two anymore. We need to work together to create a more caring system, instead of an extractive and exploitative economy that puts our climate – and care – at risk.
I hope you and your loved ones have been able to stay safe through the summer heat and storms,
