Standing in Solidarity with Striking Hotel Workers and Condemning Egregious Attacks
Dear Supporters and Community Members, The dedicated hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 11 are on strike to advocate for better wages, safer working conditions, and the respect they rightfully deserve as some of the hardest-working people in Los Angeles County. I want to express my unwavering support for these courageous individuals who are standing up for their rights and fellow workers' rights across the industry – especially the hotel workers at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach, who are strong-willed neighbors and constituents of our campaign. Last evening, I joined striking workers at Hotel Maya to hear more about the tough working conditions they experience on the job and stand in solidarity with their strike efforts. Let me be clear: I’m saddened and outraged by the news that security workers from Hotel Maya, the Fairmont Miramar, and the Laguna Cliffs Marriott egregiously and physically attacked striking workers. Such behavior is utterly unacceptable and goes against the principles of justice, fairness, and human rights we value as a campaign. I strongly condemn these violent actions and believe every worker has the right to express their grievances peacefully and without fear of retaliation. In standing firmly with the striking hotel workers, I am committed to ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed. We must recognize these individuals' crucial role in our community, often working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure guests have a comfortable and memorable experience. Clearly missing from the picket line and conspicuously silent in expressing any form of support for the striking workers is Robert Garcia, the frequent guest of Hotel Maya and the current Representative of the 42nd Congressional District. You either stand with workers, or you don’t. So my question is: Where is Congressman Garcia? Furthermore, as a candidate for Congress, I am dedicated to fostering an environment in which the rights of workers are protected, where justice prevails, and where economic inequality is addressed head-on. The struggles faced by the hotel workers at the Fairmont Miramar, the Hotel Maya, and all striking workers reflect broader economic issues within our society, and it is our duty to work together to bring about a local economy that puts working people first. I invite you to join me in expressing solidarity with the striking hotel workers and condemning any acts of violence or mistreatment. Let us send a strong message that our community stands united in support of fair labor practices, social justice, and the well-being of all its members. Thank you for your continued support as we work towards a better future for our district and nation. In solidarity, Nicole López
