On a winter morning three years ago, I got ready for work just like any other day. I packed up my things and headed to Capitol Hill, where my boss, Senator Ben Ray Luján, had been sworn in days earlier. But it wasn’t going to be a regular day. It was January 6th, 2021. 

As a congressional staffer for over five years, I’d taken the underground route between the Senate and House sides of the Capitol campus innumerable times. But on that Wednesday, as I headed to the Rayburn Health Unit to receive my first dose of the COVID vaccine, I could hear a commotion. 

Police officers ran past me, commenting on the growing crowd outside. Once on the House side, a campus-wide lockdown swiftly took effect. I’d been in lockdowns before—most had been false alarms—but this was the first one where law enforcement were visibly shaken. 

Holed up in the nearest office, separated from my coworkers and unable to leave the building, I watched the chaos taking place outside on TV, unaware the rioters would soon breach the Capitol, leaving many of my colleagues literally running for their lives.

You know who else was watching the insurrection on TV? Donald Trump, the riot’s instigator.  

Last week, Trump was finally indicted on four criminal charges for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, including inciting the insurrection as a last desperate attempt to cling to power when his other plots had failed.

For five years, I walked through the Capitol’s halls, in awe of the gravity and magnitude of what that building represents. That sanctity was desecrated by Trump and his MAGA extremists. 

The January 6th insurrection was a crime against our country and our institutions. It was the violent culmination of months of lies and illegal attempts to overturn the will of the people. And Trump and MAGA Republicans in Congress are still trying to rewrite history—falsely claiming that Trump won the election, that the people who swarmed the Capitol were patriots, and that none of them did anything wrong. 

We need your help to set the record straight and condemn Trump and his supporters’ attack on our democracy.
