After centuries of being denied the right to fully participate in our electoral process, the Voting Rights Act put us on track to achieving true democracy. It was a monumental moment in our nation's history, but the fight for voting rights and democracy is far from over.

And 58 years ago today, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law. It directly responded to discriminatory Jim Crow laws that stopped Black Americans and other marginalized communities from registering to vote.

But nationwide, Republicans have been restricting voter access in state legislatures. They pass legislation in the name of voter protection, but the GOP's aim is to disenfranchise as many voters as possible under false claims of voter fraud. We see through their lies and deception.

Poll taxes, literacy tests, and threats of violence were supposed to be left behind in the Jim Crow era. But today, we see Republicans’ attempts to take us back by restricting mail ballot drop boxes, preventing election officials from sending absentee ballots, stopping volunteers from passing out food and water to voters, and delegating more election oversight powers to GOP-held state legislatures. It's two sides of the same coin.
