** Action Alert from Save the Scenic Santa Ritas
------------------------------------------------------------
** Say NO to selling state land to Hudbay mining company!
------------------------------------------------------------
This timely action alert just came in from Save the Scenic Santa Ritas.
The AZ State Land Department Board Of Appeals on July 13th accepted the application from Hudbay for the two key Copper World parcels they wish to acquire.
The purpose of this email is to urge you to contact Governor Hobbs and Acting State Land Commissioner Robyn Sahid to object to this sale and to rquest that it be indefinitely postponed or cancelled. A public auction sale date has not been set, but one never knows what might happen in the near future. Time is of the essence with a SSSR meeting with Governor Hobbs' staff this coming Wednesday, August 9th.

Dear Governor Hobbs,
I am writing as a resident of Green Valley, (Sahuarita) Arizona. I strongly oppose Hudbay’s proposed Copper World and Rosemont mining projects. I ask you to direct the Arizona State Land Department not to put up for auction the two parcels of state trust land requested by Hudbay, whose value was approved by the ASLD Appeals Board in July. These parcels are key to Hudbay’s plans to develop its projects, and if the state puts them up for auction, it will bring us closer to the day when Hudbay’s plans will destroy our quality of life.
Water is a major concern in our area. The mine would use vast quantities of groundwater (the amount used annually by 41,000 households), which would almost certainly threaten local wells and water supplies. We can have mining, or water, but not both.
I am also extremely concerned about the dangers of heavy truck traffic on Santa Rita Road, as well as the risk of Hudbay hauling large quantities of sulfuric acid.
Hudbay’s projects would turn our beautiful mountains into a wasteland of tailings piles, which would likely leach acid and toxic metals into the groundwater over time. If Hudbay’s plans are carried out, it is almost certain that our neighborhood will see a huge drop in quality of life as well as property values.
The project would also negatively impact wildlife and eco-tourism in our area. The rich variety of wildlife in the Santa Ritas and the lush mountain habitat attract many wildlife watchers, hikers, and other outdoors enthusiasts, adding more than a billion dollars to southeast Arizona's economy annually. Mining would permanently destroy both the habitat and our economy.
Please support our communities in Tucson and southeast Arizona by saying no to this disastrous land sale.

I would like to express my objection to the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) discussing, offering, or selling our state property to Hudbay Minerals Incorporated of Toronto, Canada. If Hudbay expands its Copper World/Rosemont mining footprint in the Santa Rita Mountains, it would only further devastate our lands, raising continuing air and water contamination issues and depleting our scarce drinking water. In addition, it would diminish the value of adjacent state parcels that would not be in the best interest of the Trust’s beneficiaries, including our public schools and the citizens of Arizona.
I understand that ASLD has received Hudbay's request to acquire the 160-acre parcel (305-53-0170) and the 40-acre parcel (305-38-0120) of State Trust Land. I would like this letter to go into the file to document my objection to Hudbay's acquisition of these parcels.
In addition to these two parcels, the same concern and objection exist for Hudbay's use or acquisition of parcels of the Santa Rita Experimental Range.
Hopefully, you share the same concerns about our state lands and their use.
Thank you in advance for your favorable consideration.
