Congratulations to Joshua for identifying the American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis). This was a tricky one, as the American Lady is quite similar to the Painted Lady. According to Butterfly Fun Facts, this species enjoys feasting on rotting fruit. You can attract them to your yard with this clever feeding idea: a flower pot saucer filled with water, a flower pot turned upside down in the middle of it, and a smaller saucer placed on top. Add fruit to the top saucer and water to the bottom saucer. This will stop ants from getting to the fruit so the butterflies can enjoy it. You also can hang fruit from a tree branch or twig or place it in a suet feeder.
