Friend,

Honestly, you never know whether these "national celebration days" are real -- but I'm told today is National Love Your Pet Day.

And when I think of my colleagues who love animals, I can't think of anyone who does more than my friend Michigan Senator Gary Peters. He's a champion for pets big and small: He wrote a bill to protect survivors of domestic violence and their pets by ensuring more safe havens for survivors AND their pets.

Because as many of us know, pets are part of the family, and no one should have to choose between leaving an abusive relationship or staying and risking their safety to protect their pets. Not only that, Sen. Peters wrote a bill this year to ensure that animals used in federal research can be adopted to live long, happy, and healthy lives with new families.

Animals need a champion like Senator Peters in the Senate, but he's facing a tough reelection this year in Michigan and he needs our help: If you have a pet you love, make a donation of $5 or more to Senator Peters in their honor today.

My friend Gary doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. He loves animals, and he's spent his time in the Senate building on the advocacy he started as a congressman. In Congress, he strengthened penalties for illegal dog fighting, cracked down on puppy mills, and led the fight to ban videos showing intentional torture of animals.

Gary fights for those who need it most -- including our furry friends. If that matters to you as much as it does to me, donate $5 or more now to help reelect Gary Peters to the U.S. Senate.

Chuck Schumer
