The same extremist forces inside the Republican Party that almost destroyed America’s credit rating by plunging us into default are now threatening to shut down our government. They spent July pushing their extremist agenda rather than working with Democrats to pass budget bills to keep our government functioning. It’s the very basic aspect of their job – and they just aren’t bothering to do it.
Essential services like food stamps for vulnerable families, food safety inspections that keep us all safe, and the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of government employees are being held hostage unless we cave to their extreme agenda.
Here’s the bottom line: we must not negotiate with economic terrorists willing to make our neighbors suffer to fulfill their deeply unpopular and cruel agenda.

While we avoided default in June, Republicans deciding to hold the American economy hostage directly led to a credit agency downgrading our credit rating for the first time in over a decade.
Even though the agency specifically cited the default threat and the destabilization of January 6th as the rationale for the downgrade, Republicans are already threatening to use this downgrade to push a shutdown.
America is better than this. We must not cave to extremism, and we must rise above their obstruction of key budget priorities.
