John,
A little over one month ago, our state entered a new fiscal year—traditionally, the deadline to pass a budget for said fiscal year.
Well, it’s been a month, and the General Assembly still doesn’t even know what that budget looks like.
It gets worse: just today, the GOP Speaker of the NC House told the press that there’s “no chance” of a budget passing this month. More delays lie ahead of us.
This is no way to govern. State employees are waiting to find out what their salaries will be, schools are waiting to find out how much funding they’ll have, taxpayers are waiting to find out what the tax rate will be, and 600,000 North Carolinians are waiting on this budget to be able to access healthcare via Medicaid expansion. But while they wait, the GOP has once again spent months arguing among themselves instead of sitting down, putting in the work, and getting the bare minimum done.
John, we need to get some adults in the room. We need to break the GOP’s legislative supermajority, and we need to take back at least one chamber of the NCGA so that Democrats can hold the NCGOP accountable. When we focus on doing good for our state and work together, we can get incredible things done—but left to their own devices, it’s clear the NCGOP has different priorities.
That’s why I’m asking you to split a donation between my campaign and the NC House Democrats’ legislative campaign fund today. We need to put our money where our mouth is when it comes to supporting candidates directly—but it’s also critical that our campaign’s economic messaging reaches as many voters as possible so that we can encourage our neighbors to turn out and vote for Democrats. Can I count you in?

Together, I know we can build a government that’s more interested in uplifting North Carolinians and creating opportunity for all of us than it is in infighting and partisan games. We just have to dig deep and work hard to get there.
We'll talk again soon,
Wesley Harris
Wesley Harris is a North Carolina native and the only PhD economist in the General Assembly. First elected in 2018, he has been fighting hard for the residents of southern Mecklenburg County and working to make our state the best place in the country to live, work, and start a family. Now, Wesley is running for Treasurer to return common sense to our state government and build opportunity for every North Carolinian.
