By now, you’ve heard that a grand jury has indicted Donald Trump for a third time.

I believe these charges are the most serious yet - they allege that Trump engaged in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, including his involvement in the insurrection on January 6th.

I still remember the worn faces of our Capitol Police officers as I walked back to the House floor to finish our Constitutional duty that night and into the early hours of January 7th. Hundreds of US Capitol Police and DC Police officers fought for hours and hours to defend our democracy that day, and many of them are still grappling with life-changing severe injuries. No one is above the law - Trump is being held accountable, and it will be up to a jury to decide if he is guilty.

But this is what I mean when I say we have to protect our democracy from MAGA extremists. If our votes don’t count, we aren’t a democracy any more.
