We have good news to share! Our clients, Kirk Cameron and Brave Books were able to host a Christian book reading at the Hunstville-Madison Public Library in Alabama. The story hour event held on Saturday Aug. 5 was a tremendous success, with approximately 225 people in attendance.
Late last week, the library canceled the book reading saying there were “security concerns” and “concerns over capacity.” We immediately sent a letter asking the library to reschedule the book reading.
Our attorneys made clear that public libraries must follow the law, which states that religious groups must be treated the same as everyone else. The library reversed course in less than 24 hours.
“We are grateful to the library for working with us to ensure that the ‘See You at the Library’ event was able to take place,” said First Liberty Counsel Ryan Gardner. “Our nation's libraries are an important part of their communities and should be welcoming to messages of hope and encouragement.”
This is a huge win for our clients. Their “See You at the Library” campaign has more than 250 of these story hours scheduled all across the country. This victory sends a clear message to other librarires that they cannot exclude religious Americans from using their facilities.
Of course, this is much more than just a win for Cameron and his book publisher. It’s a win for people of faith everywhere in the country. All Americans benefit when public libraries do the right thing and ensure equal access to public spaces.
As we celebrate this win, we want to thank you for supporting First Liberty. You are a big part in helping deliver these day-to-day victories, which make a tremendous difference for everyday Americans.
