In 2012, this incredible team elected me to the U.S. Senate and helped me make history as the first openly gay Senator in our nation’s history.

I came out in college. Even back then, I knew I was interested in a career in public service, but I feared that I would have to face a serious choice between pursuing the field of my dreams or living my authentic life openly.

After seeing others in the LGBTQ+ community demonstrate acts of courage by being public about who they are and who they love, I grew to realize I could both run for office and be honest about who I am. And that’s exactly what I did.

I knew when I ran that taking on this historic role would hold a lot of weight. But I also understood what a meaningful opportunity it would be to make a real impact on people.

I ran for office to make a difference — and that’s been my mission since day one. But despite all of our hard work and progress, the 2023 legislative session has seen hundreds of bills targeting LGBTQ+ rights, particularly those of transgender youth.

In the face of nationwide attacks on our freedoms, I’ll never stop fighting for what’s right. That’s why I reintroduced the Equality Act earlier this summer, to cement the full freedom of equality and protection under federal law for every LGBTQ+ American.

But I can’t do this alone, and I’m counting on you to join me in taking a stand against anti-LGTBQ+ Republicans.
