Hi Friend, Stand with the Wet’suwet’en. Recent events on Wet’suwet’en territory in northern B.C. are a stain on Canada’s relations with Indigenous Peoples. Canada cannot say it will implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and then send in armed police to prevent hereditary chiefs from blocking a pipeline project they didn’t consent to in the first place. Sadly, Tuesday’s emergency debates in the House of Commons proved once again that the Liberals, NDP and Conservatives aren’t prepared to solve this crisis. Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh and B.C. NDP Premier John Horgan are content to point fingers at each other and wish the problem away. We’re going to hold this government accountable. That’s why the Green Party caucus, led by Elizabeth May, has put out an urgent call to Greens everywhere. We need every Canadian who values justice, dignity and human rights to sign our petition calling on the government to order the RCMP to stand down against the Wet’suwet’en and Indigenous land defenders across the country. Respect Indigenous Rights. Call off the RCMP. For every 25 signatures we gather on paper, Green MPs get an opportunity to take a stand in the House of Commons. If we get enough signatures, all three Green MPs can stand up day after day and demand to know why the government is not putting an end to this flagrant violation of Indigenous rights. Can you go out into your community, get 25 signatures and mail them to us? Can you bring a petition to your office or your child’s soccer game or your coffee shop or your farmers market and get 25 friends (or strangers) to add their names? Our action is having an impact. Stay standing, Greens. And if you need help getting organized, don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected] to learn more about what Greens are doing across the country and in your community. In action and solidarity, Eryn Sylvester P.S. Can’t collect signatures? Elizabeth May’s paper petition is the one that will have the most impact, but she also has an e-petition that she’ll present in March. Add your name today. |
