Dear John,

Today is Purple Heart Day – an opportunity for us to honor and reflect on the sacrifice of those who have been killed or injured in service of our country.

I’ve written out some of my thoughts on the topic – and about what does and doesn’t matter when someone you love is serving in the line of duty. I hope you’ll take a moment to read them:

When you stand next to the gravesite of a person who has given their life for this county, there is the deepest understanding that our love for country - for each other - matters more than any political party.

When my husband Matt was in the Marines, one of the greatest comforts I had as a military spouse when he deployed to war was that he was surrounded by a family of warriors who had his back - our back- no matter what: no matter where we came from, no matter how we worshiped, no matter what our political party affiliation was.

And, when not everyone came home, we were there for each other. And it didn’t matter if someone was a Democrat or Republican or Libertarian or simply non-political.

America is about the red, white, AND blue – not red OR blue.

Leaders like Rep. Bergman have decided a political party is more important than the people–or country-they represent. But there are more of us than there are of them. And, the tide is turning.

We know that America is stronger as a whole than she is in her parts. And, it is going to take all of us to move forward.

I'm not running to represent the red or blue parts of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. I'm running to represent all of it.

Not the special interests. Not a political party. But the PEOPLE.

And that's how I'm running this campaign, too. I'm counting on regular folks – like you – pitching in what they can when they can. Which is why I'm asking if you'll donate $5 or more right now.

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
$5 $25 $50
$100 $250 Other

Every little bit truly helps build the strong campaign we need to win.

Thank you,

Callie Barr
