Dear Friend,
Looking for a hope-filled bright spot amidst the current state of national politics in DC? Read on!
You’re invited to join MomsRising staff, other DC-area members, and kiddos next Thursday, February 27th on Capitol Hill for a fun and high-impact lobby day in support of the incredibly popular and *bipartisan* Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which would require employers to provide simple accommodations that pregnant workers might need (like a stool to sit on or extra bathroom breaks) so that nobody has to choose between a paycheck and a healthy pregnancy.
>>> Free breakfast, lunch and other goodies – like a t-shirt and aluminum water bottle – are all part of this advocacy event too! <<<
Here are the details:
What: We will visit the offices of key U.S. Representatives to drop off information about the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, along with a custom-designed water bottle because pregnant workers are still getting fired in 2020 for requesting medically-necessary workplace accommodations, like needing to have a water bottle on shift or avoid heavy lifting.
When: Thursday, February 27th → 9:00am to around 12:00pm (noon). It’s okay if you can’t stay for the whole time!
Where: Our 9am meet-up location is TBD, but it will be in one of the Congressional Office Buildings on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC
Who: You, your kids, friends + family, MomsRising staff, and coalition partners like the National Women’s Law Center, The National Partnership for Women & Families,The ACLU, A Better Balance, and March of Dimes.

Last year, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (H.R. 2694) was introduced with bipartisan support and just last month, the U.S. House Committee on Education & Labor approved the bill with a bipartisan vote.
Soon, the full U.S. House of Representatives could vote on this important legislation, so it’s critical that we show up on Thursday, February 27th to garner more support for the bill and ensure its passage!

As you can imagine, pregnancy discrimination has dire consequences for a family’s economic security because it leaves pregnant workers without a paycheck at the moment they need it most. Women of color and immigrant women are disproportionately impacted by pregnancy discrimination because they’re overrepresented in physically-demanding industries that both most commonly require and deny simple accommodation requests.
Nobody should ever have to choose between their paycheck and the health of their pregnancy, but too many workers still face this impossible choice today.
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act would require employers to make the same sort of reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers that are already made for employees with disabilities. These accommodations are simple things like being able to have a stool at a cash register station.
Sign up here to attend the Pregnant Worker Fairness Act Lobby Day on February 27th!
Together, we can make sure pregnancy discrimination finally becomes a thing of the past.
