Each year, on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, those who have lost loved ones to suicide gather at events around the world for International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day, this annual occasion is a time for those affected by suicide to come together and find support, comfort, and healing through shared experience. This year, Survivor Day will take place on November 18, 2023.
At Survivor Day events, you may meet people who have been attending for years, as well as those who are there for the very first time. For long-term survivors of suicide loss, the day serves as an annual moment of reflection, as feelings of loss can change over time through greater perspective. For those whose loss is more recent, the event can help them learn about resources in their area, receive greater clarity about what may lead someone to suicide, and meet others who have also lost loved ones to this leading cause of death.
Wherever you may be in your healing journey, the events can help you connect with a community of people who understand. Since Survivor Day takes place during the holiday season, which can be a difficult time of year for those grieving, many attendees find the events to be an especially welcome source of hope.
No matter what you're feeling, you are not alone. We encourage you to spread the word about Survivor Day with others in your community, and register for an event near you. Stay tuned as more events become available each week for registration.
