People and businesses around the country depend on a reliable U.S. Postal Service (USPS). From mail to prescription drugs, to election ballots, our Postal Service provides a public service and ensures that when we need something delivered, it's done in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Millions of Americans, particularly people living in rural areas, seniors, and veterans need to get their mail and they need their medication.

Yet, a destructive and absurd mandate has been threatening the survival of the USPS. I've been fighting for the Postal Service since first entering Congress and for critical reforms for nearly a decade. An unreasonable pre-funding mandate was placed on the USPS in 2006 by the Republican-controlled Congress with the intention of privatizing this critical public service.

The policy change forced the USPS to pre-pay for 75 years' worth of retirement funds of people who do not yet (and may not ever) work for the Postal Service. No other government entity or corporation is required to pre-fund future retiree health benefits; it's a ludicrous policy!

We should be doing everything within our power to keep our postal service running and I'm pleased to announce that recently, my bill to save our Postal Service passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. It will finally provide the USPS with critical financial relief to ensure that they can continue the important work they do.

The Postal Service employs over half a million Americans across the country and I'm proud to help protect their jobs and this critical service for our nation.
