March for tenants tomorrow!

Monday, August 7 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join DSA-LA and LATU for a march in Koreatown, what Nury Martinez called “the renters’ district”, to protest the Housing Department and the City Council operating in lock-step with corporate landlords illegally raising rents, charging false utilities, and shutting off services to force tenants out of rent controlled buildings.” Koreatown’s city council member Heather Hutt is campaigning for re-election, and we have not received any meaningful response from her regarding the grievances of the neighborhood’s renters. We call on her to support housing that is secure and a neighborhood life that’s oriented around our community’s needs rather than the wealth of landlords, developers, and politicians.

  • City council must investigate the egregious harassment the K3 tenants have experienced at the hands of their landlords
  • An immediate extension of the RSO rent freeze in response to the proposed 7-9% rent increase to RSO units, the largest increase since 1985
The types of tactics the K3 tenants are experiencing are typical of landlords eager to eliminate rent stabilized units and socially engineer away the working class in favor of greater profits, and the kind of thing we can all expect to experience while under the tyranny of the propertied class. Meanwhile, the proposed rent increase for rent stabilized units, scheduled to go into effect next year, would charge tenants of those buildings between 7-9% more per month. With over 40,000 evictions already filed this year, and with another 278,000 households behind on rent payments due to the pandemic, the increase can only truly be viewed as a disaster waiting to happen.

March on Burbank City Hall for Tenant Protections!

Tuesday, August 8 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join the Burbank Tenants Union at George Izay Park. We will march up Olive St, past the Maui Apartments, and assemble at City Hall. Rally with us outside, and then when the Council meeting opens to the public we will fill the building. Help show our renter power by making public comments in support of permanent tenant protections for Burbank.

The Aug 8 Burbank City Council meeting includes an agenda item titled: Study Session Discussion on AB 1482 and Tenant Protection Options. We renters need to show overwhelming support for tenant protections. This action could push City Council to take the necessary measures to protect the Burbank renter majority, and lay the foundation for meaningful ordinances being drafted and approved.

Join your August branch meeting!

Saturday, August 12

Attend your local branch meeting and hear about what happened at DSA's National Convention! DSA LA has 5 branches that cover most of LA county. Our branches allow members to make local connections and adapt our chapterwide work to their local conditions. They are organized by elected Branch Coordinators and have regular meetings where chapterwide updates are shared and to allow for member discussion.

Organize CD13! Volunteer launch with Hugo Soto-Martinez

Sunday, August 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Last year, DSA-Los Angeles knocked on tens of thousands of doors to help elect long-time member & labor organizer Hugo Soto-Martinez to the Los Angeles city council. But getting socialists elected is just the first step. It is a vital part of our Socialists In Office Program to put forward and advance socialist policy!
Now, we’re joining with Hugo's office to keep organizing constituents in Council District 13 to support several key working class demands: helping people facing eviction or harassment from their landlords; bringing services to our unhoused neighbors; and making the district and the city become more pedestrian and transit rider friendly by through improved transit infrastructure.
There will be food, beverages and a good time as we present our vision on how to you can get involved with our office’s efforts to make the district and the city better. We can’t wait to see you there!

Statement of solidarity with UNITE HERE workers

Yesterday, security officers at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel physically attacked striking workers as they peacefully picketed for a fair contract.

When UNITE HERE 11 workers say they have to fight for basic dignity and respect at the workplace, this is what they are up against.

DSA-LA stands in solidarity with Fairmont Miramar workers. An injury to one is an injury to all.
