Representative Adriano Espaillat Hosts Annual Environmental Justice Boat Tour on Harlem River
Espaillat and Environmental Advocates will Hold Press Conference Following Assessment Along the Harlem and Bronx Rivers
PRESS CONFERENCE: Monday, August 7th at 11:30 a.m. (EDT) at Dyckman Marina located in Inwood Hill Park
NEW YORK, NY – On Monday, August 7th at 11:30 a.m. (ET), Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) will be joined by environmental justice advocates for his annual tour to assess environmental concerns and challenges along the Harlem and Bronx River corridors.
This marks the second year Rep. Espaillat has hosted the tour in collaboration with the Bronx and Harlem River Watersheds Urban Waters Federal Partnership, Harlem River Working Group, Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, Hudson River Foundation, and WE ACT. The tour will take place at the at the Dyckman Marina located at Inwood Hill Park, 348 Dyckman Street and proceed along the Harlem River waterway.
"We have made tremendous progress to address water and air quality, as well as public waterfront access, along the Harlem riverfront since my last tour, yet much work still remains in our efforts to meet the challenges that constituents face in part due to these issues- especially Bronx residents,” said Rep. Espaillat.
“Harlem River residents have a higher-than-average asthma rate, despite the number of NYCHA projects surrounded by grass and trees. Additionally, the water quality in the region has long been neglected since it is no longer used for commercial maritime purposes. This area consists of a mix of public, private, and utility properties as well as railroads, railyards, interstate highways, bridges, power plants, docks and boathouses, and water use standards and quality cannot be ignored as development and growth continue in the neighborhood. I am grateful to each of the environmental advocates for joining our annual tour once again this year and for their continued efforts and ongoing commitment to addressing the inequalities facing residents along the greenway region," he concluded.
