Hello Michigan Democrats!
Today, we celebrate a milestone that has been instrumental in shaping our democracy - the 58th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. This landmark legislation, signed into law on August 6, 1965, ensured that every American, regardless of their race or background, has an equal right to participate in our nation's electoral process.
This Tuesday is election day, [[link removed]] and voters in select communities will make their voices heard at the polls. As Democrats, we recognize the importance of preserving and expanding voting rights and remain committed to protecting that sacred right. However, across the country, MAGA Republican lawmakers and extremists have abandoned protecting the right to vote and instead are casting doubt on our elections. As you may have read, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers stopped seven recall petitions targeting a group of mostly Democratic House lawmakers [[link removed]] from moving forward, a necessary step in protecting the voices of thousands of Michigan voters.
Our party is fighting to ensure that all eligible voters have equal access to the ballot box. In Michigan, Governor Whitmer and Michigan Democrats in the state legislature have advanced legislation protecting voting rights so every eligible voter can cast a ballot that counts. And nationally, Democrats, with President Biden and Vice President Harris at the helm remain fiercely dedicated to advancing voting rights through federal legislation such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
We are the driving force in our communities: encouraging friends, family, and neighbors to register and cast their ballots. Thanks for all your work leading up to election day - we appreciate every volunteer who takes the time to talk to voters, vote, donate, and work with local parties and candidates. By engaging in constructive conversations and empowering others to vote, we ensure that the principles of the Voting Rights Act endure for generations to come.
Thank you,
Lavora
