Dear John,
Today marks an important milestone in American history: It’s the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) being signed into law.
This legislation was made possible after years of advocacy from voting rights champions such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis, and served as a crucial step in protecting the right to vote for millions of Americans and outlawing racially discriminatory voting practices.
But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted a major part of the VRA, effectively opening the floodgates for discriminatory practices to reappear.
Now, Republicans are actively trying to make it more difficult to vote, including introducing legislation voting rights advocates are calling the “most restrictive elections bill in decades.”
The right to vote is a fundamental strength of our nation and democracy, and that is why we are taking time today to recognize this anniversary and recommit to protecting the right to vote for everyone in Northwest Indiana and our nation.
John, join me in adding your name to commit to defending voting rights today: [[link removed]]
