John,

Tonight, as I’m thinking about the horrific events of this weekend, I’m also thinking of Jim Brady, who passed away five years ago today. I wanted to take a moment to share his story of hope with you. It’s what’s inspiring me in this difficult fight.

Jim Brady and Reagan [[link removed]]

Jim Brady, who served White House Press Secretary under President Reagan, was shot in the head when a gunman tried to kill Reagan. Jim was partially paralyzed for life. But a bullet couldn’t stop him. He fought for — and won — the landmark Brady Bill.

I couldn’t be more proud to lead the organization that bears his name. Jim would have loved Brady’s new slogan, “Take action, not sides.” After all, he lived it. After he was shot, he dedicated his life to working across the aisle to pass common-sense gun reform. He knew there were solutions to end gun violence, and he demanded them — even in the face of opposition.

Jim’s legacy is that he refused to take no. He refused to believe partisan barriers were insurmountable.

Jim knew that if we want to have the best solutions, they need to come from all sides. And that in order to craft bipartisan legislation, we must bring everyone to the table. But he also knew that we don’t have to take no for an answer. That we can — and should — name names, make noise, and make those in power uncomfortable. We must fight for our lives.

The Brady Bill took six votes over seven years and three presidencies to become law. But even despite his health setbacks, Jim wouldn’t give up in the fight for a brighter future for all Americans. He knew it was possible.

It’s that persistence and steadfast determination that helps me believe in what we can achieve in these dark hours. Now is the time to unite Americans from coast to coast, young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color, to find common ground in common-sense solutions to gun violence. I know we can do it.

Thank you,
Kris
