Together, we will defend our democracy.

Roy Cooper for North Carolina

Hello John,

As we mark the 58th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, I couldn’t let today pass without reaching out.

The VRA didn’t end voter suppression, but it was a monumental step in the right direction. It banned literacy tests and helped end the practice of poll taxes designed to keep folks from casting a ballot. It changed the electoral system as we know it.

With the VRA, we came closer to the ideal of a truly representative democracy.

It’s so important that we recognize how far we’ve come in the quest for equality, but we can’t ignore how much more work still needs to be done.

Right now, radical North Carolina Republicans are again trying to suppress the vote.

They’re planning anti-voter legislation, partisan gerrymandering, and a takeover of our Board of Elections that could allow the GOP supermajority in the legislature to decide the outcome of contested elections.

Democracy is built upon the choices made by we the people. We cannot allow far-right Republicans to take away that choice and imperil our democracy itself.

And that’s why I need your help, John. Please join me in taking a stand against GOP attacks on voting rights and our democratic system of government. Add your name beside mine here >>>
