Survival Sunday: August 6, 2023

Happy weekend, friends!

Survival Sunday is a personal note and  a round-up of the week's news
and resources for folks who are interested in being prepared. This
curated collection of information is only available to email and Patreon

A PERSONAL NOTE

 

It's interesting what a feeling of luxury it is to cook in your own
kitchen with your own spices and your own cookware after more than half
a year away. Making meals takes on a new feeling of satisfaction, and
being in the moment and paying attention to each detail is a pleasure.

I grabbed a bread machine off of Facebook Marketplace when I returned to
the US so I could just say no to that nasty grocery store bread in the
cellophane wrappers. I know how to make it from scratch, of course, but
I knew also that in the heat of the summer and while I'm working on
projects, I'd be far more likely to dive into regular breadmaking with
that shortcut. It's such a lovely addition to a tasty meal, especially
when slathered with salted butter.

I had planned on getting a new pet when I got settled but I had to speed
up my timeline when I was offered a pretty little Russian  Blue kitty
who needed to be rehomed. And of course, I had to adopt her, didn't I?
Who could turn down such an offer?

Not me. That's for sure.

Meet Kushka, the newest addition to the Luther family.

She's about a year old but still very playful and kitten-y.  Little
Kushka probably had a home at one point - she's a purebred - but was
found as a pregnant stray. After she was spayed, a nice local family
adopted her but she couldn't get along with their existing cat and they
were concerned one of the cats would be injured.

So, she made her way to my house, where she hid for an entire day before
finally coming out to pat me on the face with her little purple paw.
(Her toe beans are actually purple! The CUTEST!) Once she warmed up, she
became super-friendly and now follows me around the place like a dog.
She's such a joy to have around.

good companions.
