John,
I’ve committed to always be transparent about where we’re spending campaign funds and our reasoning why. Today I want to talk about why I’ve decided to make Facebook ads a part of our campaign strategy. If you’d like to chip in to support our digital program, here’s the link.
I’ll be the first to tell you there are real issues with Facebook and its profit incentives. I’ve also seen the negative effects of misinformation spreading on the platform, especially when they are in Spanish. It’s incredibly frustrating and Facebook has to do better.
But I also want to be very clear - Democrats cannot cede important platforms like Facebook to Republicans. Facebook is a vital lifeline for messaging to millions of swing voters. If we do not communicate with them, we will lose. It’s that simple.
So, how do we make sure our Facebook ads are effective? We create pithy content that draws a clear distinction between our message (government can be used for good) versus Republicans’ message (be scared of people who are different than you). Here are some examples:

As you know, Republicans are already running negative ads against me on Facebook. And in response, we have decided to run our own response ads. We believe it’s a strategic imperative that swing voters hear our rebuttal, even if it’s over a year away from the election. So, here comes the ask…
Now that you understand the why I’d love your help with the how. The only way we can fund this digital program is with your grassroots support. We don’t take a dime of corporate PAC money. If you can, I’d appreciate any support you can give to help us fund this program.
