Less
than a day after the massive earthquake toppled buildings and homes,
devastating Northwest Syria, Mercy Corps was on the ground responding.
Team members — many of whom had lost family and friends in the tragedy —
immediately began distributing New Arrival Kits. The kits include
blankets, mattresses, jerrycans, rugs, solar lamps, and other supplies for
families displaced and affected by the disaster.
We conducted a rapid needs assessment to determine the support families
needed most and a market assessment to identify whether and how additional
supplies could be secured. Now, six months later, Mercy Corps has reached
more than 300,000 people with critical aid in the wake of this crisis.
This kind of response is essential to saving lives and livelihoods in the
wake of an emergency. Our Global
Emergency Response Fund allows us to prepare for and respond to
emergencies when they strike and reach the people who need support the
most.

[ [link removed] ]Providing support in displacement camps
[ [link removed] ]A Mercy Corps team member speaks with Rahaf*, a woman living at a
camp for displaced people. She said she was terrified when the
earthquakes struck — it was the first earthquake she had ever
experienced. Mercy Corps has been supporting residents of the camp
with clean water and sanitation for years, but it has become even more
critical in the wake of the massive earthquake. (*Name changed for
security.)
When our needs assessment determined local markets were viable, Mercy
Corps began distributing cash assistance to earthquake-affected families.
Cash assistance allows families to purchase what they need while
supporting the local economy. In addition, Mercy Corps provided 60 small
businesses with cash grants and technical training to help restore their
businesses and improve local markets.
However, there are still many challenges to delivering aid in a
politically and economically complex region like Northwest Syria. Before
the earthquakes, 4 million people already relied on humanitarian
assistance after experiencing more than a decade of conflict. Since the
earthquake, over 100,000 more people have flooded camps for displaced
people.
Mercy Corps is committed to staying
the course as families and communities recover, rebuild, and thrive — but
we need your support.
