Hi John,
For the past few months, over 10,000 Americans have called, tweeted,
emailed to push for the clean reauthorization of the US President’s
Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The program is the largest
commitment ever, from any nation, to address a single disease. It’s also
an unparalleled success story, with AIDS deaths decreasing by 64 percent
since PEPFAR’s launch and 25 million lives saved.
But the clock is ticking. PEPFAR expires on September 30 and its
reauthorization is in serious jeopardy as partisan politics threaten two
decades of bipartisan support. This is all the more disheartening when we
know that 25 million lives have been saved as a direct result of
bipartisan compromise and collaboration across presidential
administrations and from Congress.
News stories this week have only reinforced the importance of PEPFAR and
what is at stake, including headlines in the New York Times, “AIDS Relief
Program Under Threat[...]” and Washington Post “HIV care bogged down by
politics[...]”
The end of this virus is within reach, but the US must continue to lead
the fight. [ [link removed] ]Sign your name with just one click to speak up for PEPFAR
