Daily Docket — Friday, Aug. 4

Here are some updates.

  • In a triumphant win for voters, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Mississippi's Jim Crow-era provision banning individuals convicted of certain felonies from voting for life violates the 8th Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

  • A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit from Michigan Republicans seeking to decertify and "rerun" the 2020 presidential election in the state.

  • According to data from the Ohio secretary of state, 23 of Ohio’s 50 counties do not have enough poll workers to run Tuesday’s special election. Voters will be deciding Issue 1, a measure that would make it harder for voters to amend the state constitution.

  • Abe Hamadeh asked the Arizona Supreme Court for a second trial in his lawsuit contesting his loss in the 2022 attorney general race. In December, the trial court rejected Hamadeh's contest after a trial and denied his request for a new trial in July.

  • A Florida state court hearing scheduled for today in a lawsuit challenging the state's congressional map was postponed. The trial is still scheduled to begin on Aug. 21.

Here’s what to expect coming up.

  • On Monday, trial will begin in a consolidated federal lawsuit challenging the districts for Galveston County, Texas’ Commissioners Court, the county’s legislative body. The plaintiffs allege that the redistricting plan violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by denying Black and Latino voters the opportunity to elect their candidates of choice.
