To teach that there was anything remotely redeeming about the institution of slavery is disturbing beyond comprehension and a vicious assault on the dignity of humanity.
The truth can hurt, but it is also the only way to live free and not chained to the perils of history.
If we are truly committed to overcoming the scourge of racism and achieving racial harmony, genuine dialogue committed to truth and reconciliation is required. Here in New York, we are committed to this work; for it is only through truth that we as Americans can ensure the fulfillment of our collective purpose - to achieve liberty and justice for all.
