Friend -
This is another frequently challenged children’s book in Florida. And Missouri… And Colorado… But it is a beloved addition to our shelves at home that I want to share with you and your family. You know, in case you’re raising little rebels like my partner and I.
Given the recent Supreme Court ruling on 303 Creative L.L.C. v. Elenis , or what I’ve coined as the Supreme Court’s parting f-you gift to Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community, I’m even more enraged about the month of June. If you read my email “The Anniversary I Loathe” then you know that June is the Supreme Court’s favorite month to crush and demolish human and civil rights, bringing us back to when America was great… for white people (and mainly men).
I still believe that none of this sh*t would be happening if the electorate had chosen the more qualified candidate in 2016. But I know, I know. Her emails!
Back to Uncle Bobby’s Wedding .
This book, written by Sarah S. Brannen and illustrated by Lucia Soto, has been out for a while. Since 2008! And while the original illustrations of Uncle Bobby, his fiance Jamie, and his niece Chloe were of guinea pigs, it was still the 8th most-challenged book in the US that year. The recent illustrations though = **chef’s kiss** 😘

As the title shares, Uncle Bobby’s getting married but his niece Chloe isn’t sure she’s ready for it, fearing that Uncle Bobby won’t have time for her. Uncle Bobby proves that he will and that both of them, Jamie and him, will always have time for Chloe. Told through bright and colorful illustrations + character diversity, it’s a perfect book for kids 2-9 years old.
Get the book at your local bookstore or at Bookshop.org [[link removed]] . Why? Because love is love is love is love.
And also, because our little rebels will one day be the ones to make good trouble, to tear it down, and to build anew. If we share stories of inclusion and diversity hopefully they won’t be so close-minded like the cronies on our Supreme Court. Who knows!? Maybe the little rebels we raise today will be the Supreme Court Justices of tomorrow.
A progressive mom’s musings,

PowerPAC is a social justice organization that strategically directs financial and human resources to local and state organizations working to deliver wins in legislative fights, ballot initiatives, and more. For years the money we've raised has, dollar for dollar, been given back to the communities we work with. We've made sure that your investments were being used to build power for our communities because too often we are underrepresented and ignored.
