Listening to You
Friend,
Being available and accessible to you is a top priority of mine. I held listening sessions in Rock, Racine, and Kenosha Counties this week. Having the ability to hear your concerns directly is important to me. In each of the meetings we discussed how costs remain high, the importance of protecting Social Security and Medicare, ways we can support veterans, our youth’s mental health, and supporting law enforcement.
We had a productive conversation about the issues facing our country. I'm working to keep our communities safe, bring down costs, and protect Social Security and Medicare.
I also had the opportunity to share some of my work this Congress. This Congress, I have introduced several pieces of legislation. I wanted to make sure you were aware of two nonpartisan pieces of legislation I’m working on bringing to the House Floor.
Veterans Survivor Benefits Fairness Act
Our veterans and their families have made immense sacrifices in service to our country. After hearing the VA demanded a family repay rightly deserved survivor benefits to the VA after a family member has passed, I stepped in. My bill, the Survivor Benefits Fairness Act, will ensures the VA cannot demand that families of beneficiaries pay back their monthly benefits in the event of a surviving spouse's death.
We are always looking for ways to help solve the problems you are experiencing with the federal government. Each of our veterans and their families deserve the benefits they have fought for and earned. I’m committed to getting this important piece of legislation across the finish line.
Protecting Young Minds Online Act
I am working to protect children from the adverse effects of social media. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in children and young adults who are suffering from depression, anxiety, and in worst cases self harm. Unfortunately, suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 15-24.
In an effort to protect children from the negative effects of social media, I introduced the Protecting Young Minds Online Act. This bill requires the Center for Mental Health Services to develop and disseminate a strategy to address the effects of new technologies, like social media, on children's mental health.
We need to come together to give parents, teachers, and children the tools they need to promote positive mental health and protect our nation’s children online. This nonpartisan legislation is a step in the right direction for helping and protecting our children’s mental health.
Serving you and your family is my top priority. My office has assisted over 1,200 individuals with federal casework and responded to over 23,000 messages this year alone. If you missed the listening sessions, please don't hesitate to contact my office if you need assistance dealing with a federal agency or want to share your opinion on an issue.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
