Last month, Arizona’s congressional delegation introduced the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument Act to the Senate and the House with the overwhelming support from community members, local officials, conservation advocates, and tribal leaders and members of Arizona’s Indigenous peoples, who have long been on the frontlines of the effort to protect this land.

The Grand Canyon is our state’s most notable landform, and tourists to the national park contributed over 700 million dollars to the local economy in 2021. 11 Associated Tribes call the 1,069,970 acres of land in and around the Canyon home. This vital legislation would make permanent the 20 year mining moratorium that is currently in place to protect the sacred and ancestral lands around the Grand Canyon.
