In just the last few weeks, we’ve seen the terrifying effects of climate change devastate communities in our region. As the climate crisis continues to worsen, the impact on Pennsylvania families will grow exponentially.

Massive flash floods destroyed roads and claimed the lives of seven people in Bucks County. An extreme heat wave across much of the state is putting families in danger, especially Pennsylvanians who don’t have access to air conditioning. The Canadian wildfires continued to cause days of bad air quality throughout the state.

We all deserve a liveable climate. But unless we transition to clean energy, our future will hold only more extreme heat waves, deadly storms, and toxic air.

In Pennsylvania and across the country, we need to take a two-pronged approach to scale up investment in clean energy projects ASAP.

We must implement President Biden’s Clean Energy Plan across the state and make sure Pennsylvanians know they can soon access cost AND climate saving measures like tax credits for electric vehicles and to upgrade to more efficient home appliances.

And we must pass critical environmental legislation, like Solar for Schools and Community Solar, to get our buildings powered by clean energy, but progress has been blocked by a vocal minority in the legislature.

Extreme weather is taking a serious toll on our lives. Of all natural disasters, heat is the number one killer – and the heat waves across the country are overwhelming emergency rooms.1 We’re going to see more heat-related deaths in more parts of the country – which is going to impact low-income communities and communities of color the hardest here in Pennsylvania, as these populations are concentrated in our cities where the urban heat island effect is strongest.

The only way to reverse course and avoid the worst impacts of climate change is to transition as quickly as possible to our shared clean energy future. Here’s what that looks like for Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania:
- Reducing harmful air pollution in overburdened communities
- Increasing clean energy technology like wind and solar
- Combatting water contamination and forever chemicals, like PFAS
- Preserving our open spaces and addressing sprawl
- Electrifying and expanding public transportation
