Yes, you read that correctly. Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is trying to purge over 191,000 registered voters from the rolls this month under the state’s shameful “use-it-or-lose-it” policy. To put the impact of this purge into perspective, 191,000 voters is:
* More than the population of Savannah, Georgia
* More than twice the size of the crowd at a Georgia Bulldogs football game
* About twice as much as Senator Raphael Warnock’s margin of victory in his 2022 Senate runoff race against Herschel Walker
* About four times as much as Senator Jon Ossoff’s margin of victory in his 2021 Senate runoff race against David Perdue
That’s a crucial number of potential voters — who, as we’ve witnessed, can determine the outcome of an election — that Republicans are attempting to disenfranchise.
If Raffensperger successfully purges these 191,000 voters, it could affect the outcome of Georgia elections to come — including the 2024 presidential election. And it could disproportionately silence voters of color.
