Headlines

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has backed Labour’s plans to make Britain’s streets safer, and criticised the Government after the scale of Police cuts in the North West were revealed.

The Conservative Government have slashed the number of Police Community Support Officers by 47% in the North West since 2015, meaning there are more than 2,300 less officers on the street.

Gwynne has slammed the cuts and accused the Government of taking its eye off the ball when it comes to neighbourhood policing. He has backed Labour’s plan to make Britain’s streets safer which includes:
* Preventing crime by putting 13,000 extra neighbourhood police and PCSOs on our streets
* Punishing offenders with tougher sentences for rapists and the introduction of ‘Respect Orders’ to sanction persistent antisocial behaviour.
* Protect communities with more police, more action to stop people being drawn into crime and more prosecutions.

Labour has made a specific commitment to halve violence against women and girls, and to clamp down on antisocial behaviour which has skyrocketed nationally by 30% since 2015.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“The Tories have taken their eye off the ball, slashed local PCSOs and made our communities less safe as a result.

We need to get tough on crime, boost police numbers and take action to prevent people from being drawn into a life of crime. Instead, we’ve got a government that is sitting on its hands while antisocial behaviour skyrockets.

The Tories are soft on crime. It’s time for them to move out of the way and let Labour get on with the job of making our streets safer.”

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has marked Love Parks Week 2023 by urging local residents to make the most of their brilliant green spaces.

Love Parks Week is an annual event, running this year from 28 July to 6 August, which celebrates parks, green spaces, and the dedicated volunteers that look after them all year round.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, Love Parks Week is also an opportunity to investigate some of the issues around our parks. To mark this year’s campaign, Keep Britain Tidy have released guidance – produced in conjunction with Leeds University – on how to make parks safer for women and girls.

In addition to backing this important new guidance, Gwynne has urged local residents to get out and about at parks and green spaces.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“From the Tame Valley to Victoria Park to Ladbroke Wood to Hardy Woods, there are some absolutely fantastic local green spaces.

But these spaces need protecting, and I know from my own work with Friends of the Tame Valley that there is no shortage of local people who care passionately about looking after our green spaces and parks.

That’s why Love Parks Week is so important; to celebrate the volunteers working hard and encourage others to get involved and explore their local green spaces. I’m also really pleased that, this year, Keep Britain Tidy are focussing on the really important issue of park safety, which needs urgent attention.”

** Another wonderful Worker Bee Market

I had another great visit to Worker Bee Markets ([link removed]) in Reddish last weekend. There was a great array of stalls of different kinds. It’s great to see so many crafters and artisans out selling their wares!

Thanks, as always, to the organisers and sellers who make this market such a success.


** Women's Voices Manchester
------------------------------------------------------------

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of meeting Nadia and an amazing bunch of ladies at Womens Voices Manchester ([link removed]) .

They are based in Longsight and do some fantastic work empowering women and girls from minority ethnic communities across Greater Manchester.

As a group, they’ve been engaging with young people for #AsianHeritageMonth ([link removed]) and it was great to see some of the work on the walls. It was also nice to hear about environmental projects they’re planning for the months ahead, and to hear the heartening testimonies of some of the women involved in the group.

A massive thank you to Longsight Councillor Suzanne Richards ([link removed]) for introducing me to these amazing people! 💜


** Band in the Park
------------------------------------------------------------

🎺 And it was great to get along to the Audenshaw Memorial Gardens for the first of the brilliant Team Audenshaw ([link removed]) Band in the Park events.

Thankfully the rain held off and Droylsden St John's Castle Brass Band ([link removed]) were fantastic. A fabulous event all round. Thanks Councillor Teresa Smith ([link removed]) , Councillor Nick Axford ([link removed]) and Councillor
Charlotte Martin ([link removed]) for arranging this event.

The next one is on 3rd September at Ryecroft Hall. 2-4pm

📰 READ: With school out for the summer, I know lots of parents and guardians will be looking ahead to the next 5 weeks and wondering how they're going to fill the time with work responsibilities and the rising cost of living.
