The year was 2010, and I was walking hand-in-hand with my Mom as she stepped into the voting booth on Primary Election Day. She was running to be the next Governor of South Carolina.
If she was nervous at all, she didn’t show it. She had a bigger smile on her face than I had ever seen before. Although I was young and didn’t quite understand the gravity of that moment, I could sense something big was happening.
My Mom, on the other hand, never took a moment of that challenge for granted. I remember her taking it all in until I impatiently interrupted asking, "Are you ready, mommy?" To my surprise, she took my little hand and we punched the button that read, "Nikki Haley” together. I can still remember the immense pride we both felt walking out of the booth. |
