Back to school season is here, Friend. And for LGBTQ young people, school can be a tricky place to explore who they are and how they identify, especially if they face harassment, discrimination, or a lack of resources.
LGBTQ students are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide compared to their straight and cisgender peers. However, our research shows that LGBTQ students who identified a greater number of supportive school staff reported higher levels of self-esteem, lower levels of depression, and lower rates of having seriously considered suicide in the past year.
It’s up to each of us to create safe spaces wherever we can. The Trevor Project offers multiple resources to support allyship for educators and supportive adults. You can find more information, discussion guides, and action plans to support LGBTQ young people in schools:
Together, we can make sure that LGBTQ young people who need support know they are not alone. Your support will help us provide them with the affirmation and love they deserve — every single one.
