As a former teacher and professor, bringing a whiteboard to Congress felt
only natural.

It ended up being an incredibly useful tool for breaking down the math
behind all sorts of issues, and helped me connect Washington with the
lives of my constituents.

You too, can whiteboard anyone, at any time. Here’s how to do it:

 1. Work backward: Determine what you want your lesson to accomplish.
 2. Let the whiteboard speak for itself: It’s a visually engaging tool, so
utilize it. Draw a chart or graph. Hold off on simple bullet points.
 3. Control the conversation: In Congressional Hearings, we only have a
few minutes to question a witness. That means really utilizing your
questions.
 4. Don't fear silence: No explanation needed.
 5. Be fearless: Accountability is a good thing.

I carry a whiteboard in my purse because you never know when good
oversight will be needed. And if I’m elected to the U.S. Senate, I’ll
serve on double the committees. That means double the whiteboards, and
most importantly—twice as many opportunities for accountability!
