Lauren just filed legislation to finally address hundreds of years of historical injustices faced by Native people in Illinois.

In the 1830s, the U.S. government illegally auctioned off over 1,280 acres of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation lands near the village of Shabbona in DeKalb County.

For nearly two centuries since, our neighbors who belong to the Nation have lived and worked in our community — but without the recognition and legal protections they are owed.

Now, the bipartisan Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Shab-eh-nay Band Reservation Settlement Act of 2023 , sponsored by Lauren and fellow Illinois Rep. Jesús “Chuy” Garcia, would right this wrong and return the land to the Nation while preserving homes that currently sit on the reservation.

It’s no surprise that this solution is supported by the local community, too. In IL-14, we’re committed to our shared values and building a more equitable and compassionate society. That’s why Team Underwood is raising awareness and advocating for justice and recognition for the Native people in Illinois.

John, it’s time to pass this legislation and return the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s land and we need to know that folks like you support it. Will you add your name to our petition calling on Congress to pass the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Shab-eh-nay Band Reservation Settlement Act of 2023 ?
