Plus, reflections from the AFT CSI conference and more! Morningside Center NEWSLETTER Dear Morningside Center friends, Below you'll find lessons on Ella Baker, a wonderful video on restorative practices, reflections on AFT's Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute, and more. Enjoy! AFT Conference: Collaborating to Make Our Schools Culturally Responsive The theme of this year’s Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute was “Transforming Systems to Be Culturally Responsive.” Morningside Center was honored to join the planning team for this three-day conference organized by the AFT and the UFT Teacher Center. The AFT sent teams from over 25 cities that included educators, principals, superintendents, and, importantly, students and parents. Not only did we learn from this diverse community, we were able to share our own learnings. We are heartened that so many people across the country are debating best practices for creating culturally responsive schools. New on TeachableMoment Celebrating Ella Baker and Her “Group-Centered Leadership” Ella Baker, who helped build many of the most important organizations of the civil rights movement, defied traditional gender roles. She deprioritized charismatic leadership from above and instead empowered people to take charge of their own struggles for freedom. Teach on it! What We're Reading & Watching "Restorative practices to me is a lifestyle. It means community, it means building relationships, it means healing." -- Jose Rivera, from Restorative Practices in Crew at Brooklyn Collaborative at EL Education OPINION: At-risk youth aren’t the problem — but they can be part of the counseling solution "Anyone who works closely with teenagers and young adults knows that they are hungry for meaningful roles. Able to quickly absorb information that is of interest, they long to put this knowledge to practical use in work and career exploration. Importantly, they hold considerable influence over others in their age group and those just behind them." By Janice Bloom at the Hechinger Report Save the date!
