The United States has a maternal mortality rate more than twice the rate of other developed nations. Our nation’s maternal mortality rate is even higher among women of color and women in rural areas. And Georgia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country.
This crisis is alarming, and we must take steps to improve maternal and child health, as well as to reduce racial and geographic disparities in health care.
Earlier this month, I introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Healthy Moms and Babies Act to combat the maternal mortality crisis, modernize our health care system, and improve health outcomes for women and children.
The bill would increase services and access to care, support women and babies with new technology like telehealth, and take more steps toward reducing our maternal mortality rate.
The CDC has found that 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. We have a responsibility to women and children across the country to combat the maternal mortality crisis.
