Hello,
How do I explain to my children that this isn't normal -- especially when I sometimes have to remind myself?
I remember when mass shootings were rare. And now, at least 30 people died in the 10th and 11th mass shootings of the year -- both within just 24 hours.
Sometimes, I feel hopeless. It feels like there's nothing I can do to change the fact that when I send my children to school or when we go the grocery store one day, we may not come home.
Sometimes, I just feel angry. Politicians (including the president of the United States) refuse to act and shift the blame -- even as deranged murderers repeat their hate speech to justify unleashing weapons of war to kill immigrants, women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and anyone their heroes have condemned.
It's exhausting. It's painful. And it's frightening.
But this isn't normal. It's not inevitable. And we need to change the way our nation operates.
When our leaders refuse to enact common-sense gun reforms while using hate and fear to win elections, it's our duty to replace them. It's our responsibility to build a bench of leaders who will step up and help us all win.
When my children ask what we can do to keep them safe, the answer can't be "nothing." So as absolutely heartbroken as I feel today, tomorrow I'm going to get back to work and keep fighting for them. So will Stefanie, and so will our team.
To all of you who lost loved ones in El Paso or Dayton this weekend, we offer you our prayers, our solidarity, and our action.
Thank you for being a part of this family,
Quentin James
