Hillary and I just returned from Puerto Rico, where we were inspired by the resilience of our fellow citizens as they work to recover not only from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, but from the recent earthquakes that have struck the island. With your support, the Clinton Foundation is taking action to accelerate their efforts.

During my trip, I visited Caras con Causa, a partner of the Hispanic Federation and Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Action Network, where graduate students from the University of Puerto Rico are providing post-disaster mental health services to the community. Caras con Causa has also implemented a robust STEM education program for students from local public schools to engage young people in environmental rehabilitation projects, including reforestation. While I was there, I met middle school students who were putting their lessons into action to remove plastic waste from local beaches.
 
And at the meeting of the CGI Action Network in San Juan, members announced 28 new projects that will continue to advance long-term recovery, resilience, and preparedness throughout the region—supporting small businesses, promoting green building and construction, strengthening health systems, and much more.
 
We’re making important progress, but we all know there’s much more to do—and the need for action is more urgent than ever. Because of climate change, devastating storms are no longer once-in-a-lifetime events, but the new normal. And even for those communities outside the hurricane belt, we know that climate-related events like flooding and coastal erosion will continue to intensify as sea levels continue to rise.
