Dear John,
Texas just kicked 500,000 people off of Medicaid—most of them are kids. Last session, I filed H.B. 1599 with bipartisan support to ensure this wouldn't happen, but Dan Patrick refused to let it out of the Senate. Now we’re seeing the consequences.
Since 2021, Texas has been prohibited from removing people from Medicaid due to COVID-19. In April, those protections were lifted and eligible families have been forced to sign up again. As a result, over 500,000 Texans have lost Medicaid – the vast majority of them have been children.
But they’re not losing access to healthcare due to eligibility, they’re losing access because of paperwork issues at HHSC—and it’s only going to get worse.
This is unacceptable. We know without Medicaid, primary care and preventive visits will decrease, while the short-term and long-term costs of healthcare will increase for Texas families.
