One way is with a bomb.

And the other way is with progressive left-wing policies. The difference, as CTUP co-founder Arthur Laffer reminds us, cities can recover from an atomic bomb.

2) Fingers Crossed: School Choice Might Not Be Dead Yet In Pennsylvania
As regular Hotline readers know, last month PA’s Democratic governor Josh Shapiro flip-flopped from favoring a $100 million school choice bill - to opposing it. He buckled to the teacher unions.

Shapiro said the bill was a dead letter because there weren’t enough votes in the House. Now there are.

Amen Brown (a Philadelphia Democrat who previously voted for scholarships before reversing in a hostage-style video) is back on board and calling for the governor to get it done:

My thoughts are straightforward. We need [education] options. I’m a supporter. I’m on record for voting for options when no one else did. So that vote came from understanding what’s going on in our communities…

We need to really weigh our options here. What’s more important? Are we really gonna put on hold the whole entire state because of $100 million [about 1% of the budget], or are we gonna say, you know what, okay, let’s take a step back and really weigh the options?

There is now majority support in both houses for a budget including scholarships to rescue poor kids from failing schools – if the Democrats allow it to reach the House floor and Governor Shapiro signs it.

Shapiro has been a laughingstock throughout the country for the last several weeks. He has a chance to redeem himself.

3) Meanwhile, PA’s House Majority Leader’s Solution To Failing Schools Is More Solar Panels
Here’s an indication of how looney the anti-school choice crusaders have become. Our friend Charles Mitchell at the Commonwealth Foundation in Pennsylvania reports:

“House Majority Leader Matt Bradford. who led the charge to block funding for Lifeline Scholarships in Pennsylvania held a bizarre rally ([link removed]) in Philadelphia highlighting the poor quality of many of the city’s public schools—and vowing to keep kids trapped there. [Apparently, the failure of the schools is a reason to OPPOSE school choice!]

Rep. Bradford and company doubled down on the failed status quo, demanding more money, including installing SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF OF THE SCHOOLS.”

Reflect for just a minute about how demented this statement is. In Philadelphia, the vast majority of kids can’t read or write or do math at grade-level proficiency. Many kids can’t read or do math AT ALL! This is an all-hands-on-deck emergency.

And somehow the solution is to install solar panels? Sure, that will improve test scores.

4) Meet Fauci's Replacement: Alabama's Leading Covidian Crackpot
Why is the Biden administration so intent on staffing key health policy positions with people who got everything about COVID wrong and never admitted it?

Recall that North Carolina lockdown artist Mandy Cohen has taken over for Rochelle Walensky at CDC. Yesterday, the new NIAID director was named to take over for Fauci. It's Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo of UAB, who was Alabama's leading TV COVID panic merchant.

Marrazzo has almost an unblemished record of being wrong on every issue related to COVID.

She was pro-lockdowns and warned about the "collateral damage" ([link removed]) not of closing schools but of opening them.

In November 2020 – long after everyone knew better – Marrazzo claimed COVID has a 10% mortality rate. ([link removed]) At least 20 times higher than the actual rate!

In August 2021, Marrazzo dramatically overstated mask efficacy ([link removed]) based on a paper she authored that found mask mandates in healthcare settings reduced... unmasked encounters.

And of course, she was part of the "don't approve the vaccine before election day" anti-Trump cabal. ([link removed]) Then after the election was decided, she was suddenly madly pro-vaccine distribution.

5) New York City Democrats Want Biden To Declare an Illegal Immigration “State of Emergency”
How’s this for a man bites dog story:

For decades, Democratic pols in blue cities have been declared “sanctuary cities” to protect illegal migrants from being deported by immigration authorities.

But none of them probably imagined the havoc and chaos created by Biden’s border enforcement policy - or lack thereof. Since taking office, Biden has officially released 2,020,522 illegal aliens into the U.S., and an additional 1.3 million “known getaways” are residing in the country.

New York City officials say their city is at a “breaking point” after 90,000 illegals arrived since this spring. A total of 54 NYC Democratic elected officials have written Biden asking him to declare a state of emergency because “the influx of migrants is so great that the city is running out of resources….the current unstructured state of immigration policy and response needs to end.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has ordered flyers to be distributed at the southern border warning border crossers to “consider another city” besides the Big Apple. “There is no guarantee we will be able to provide shelter and services to new arrivals,” the flyers warn and Adams himself has given asylum seekers already in the city a 60-day notice they will have to find other housing.

One irony of these fiscal and social problems in NYC exacerbated by the arrival of these illegal migrants is that New York is a city of some eight million people. So the illegal immigration population as a share of the city’s overall population isn’t much different than the average around the country. Yet now it’s the sanctuary city advocates who are shouting enough is enough.

The villain here is NOT the poor migrants - most of whom are seeking a better life. The villain is Joe Biden who has installed the most inhumane immigration policy in modern times.
