As the House and Senate work to agree on terms to fund the federal government by the September 30 deadline, a GOP Rep went out and spoke to reporters on the Capitol steps and said “we shouldn’t fear a government shutdown.”

Government shutdowns are devastating for the American people. Seniors worry about getting their Social Security checks, people already waiting too long for passports won’t get them, dedicated workers like air traffic controllers and parks employees get laid off, and military families wouldn’t receive their benefits.
And let’s not forget the things Mark and his colleagues have accomplished for Americans while the government has been open: We passed the bipartisan infrastructure bill that’s repairing our nation’s roads, bridges and railways and bringing high-speed internet to rural communities, signed our first major gun-safety bill in decades into law, and we passed the CHIPS Act to lower cost for families, strengthen our national security, and create good-paying manufacturing jobs here in the United States.
Long story short, government shutdowns hurt our hardworking civil servants and the millions of Americans that rely on federal services and keep us from making progress.
