Clearinghouse on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention

Research Digest on VMMC, July 2023

Dear Colleague,

The latest issue of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest covers articles published from 1 April to 30 June 2023. The digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention.

Links are provided to either the abstract online or the full text of articles that are open access. For additional information on VMMC, search the Clearinghouse’s Resource Library.

Featured Articles

  • A randomised trial in urban and rural settings in South Africa found that two-way texting was noninferior to routine in-person visits for identifying adverse events associated with VMMC, demonstrating that this approach is safe and also significantly reduces the follow-up visit workload.
  • In a cross-sectional study in eight Ugandan villages, one-quarter of the population underestimated the local prevalence of male circumcision, and men who underestimated the prevalence were less likely to be circumcised.
  • A systematic review concluded that traditional male circumcision practices and related HIV risk could have negative effects on men and their families.

Other abstracts featured in the digest address the protocol for the first randomised trial of male circumcision among men who have sex with men; the protective effect of male circumcision against human papillomavirus; resource allocation and costs for HIV services in Tanzania; whether there is a relationship between male circumcision and sexual dysfunction; and community engagement in VMMC.

Best regards,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
