Right now climbers are on the roof of Rishi Sunak’s mansion draping it in 200 metres of oily black fabric to protest against his plans to launch a new oil drilling frenzy as the world literally burns.

Sunak’s government have already announced that they will keep handing out new licences to oil companies so they can explore for more fossil fuels in the North Sea. This would be a  climate disaster, but it doesn’t stop there. Sunak has also said he wants to approve drilling at Rosebank - the UK’s largest undeveloped oil field.

We can’t sit back and watch him throw fuel on the flames.

“The era of global warming has ended and the era of global boiling has arrived”. These were the words of the UN Secretary General António Guterres speaking in the wake of wildfires, flooding and other extreme weather events happening across the globe in the last few weeks. [1]

This moment requires a prime minister who’s ready to be a climate leader, instead we have a climate aronist. Sunak is happy to hold a blowtorch to the planet if he can score a few political points by sowing division around climate in this country. This is cynical beyond belief.

New oil and gas will be catastrophic for the climate and a terrible deal for the public. It will do nothing to increase our energy security, or lower people’s bills - because the oil companies who own it will simply sell it on the international market. [2] [3]

Oil companies are the only ones who will win from new drilling. It’s a national scandal that the Prime Minister is putting their profits before our future on a habitable planet. Whilst we’re on his roof, can you make sure he gets the message online too - let’s make him feel the pressure from all angles? At a time when the UK public needs real solutions - like cheap, homegrown renewables - to bring energy prices down, Rishi Sunak should not put oil profits over everyone else.

The last time we went to his mansion to demand an upgrade to the country’s national grid we made a real impact. [5] Our pool party video went viral, it was viewed over two million times across social media and got a massive pick up in the press. [6] This played a big role in pushing the government to pass a new law and take an important first step to upgrading the grid so we can connect more renewable power to our energy system. [7] People power works and we need it now more than ever.
